Thomas David Samuel Margoschis
Thomas David Samuel Margoschis was born in Poland around 1805 and came to England some time before 1838 as he married Mary Ann Thomas in St Mary’s church in Cheltenham in Gloucestershire on 3 July 1838. In the marriage register entry he gave his occupation as a Dealer, his father as Joel Samuel Margoschis and his father’s occupation as a Spirit Distiller. At the time of his marriage he was living in Hereford Cottage in Cheltenham and he was of full age. Mary Ann was also living at Hereford Cottage, she was also of full age and her father was Evan Thomas a Builder. Both Samuel and Mary Ann were single at the time of the marriage.
Samuel was baptised into the Church of England at St Mary’s in Cheltenham prior to his marriage with his adult baptism taking place on 15 April 1838. His parents were given as Samuel and Alexander (sic) Margoshis and he was resident at Hereford Cottage at the time.
Children born in Cheltenham
Samuel and Mary Ann’s first child John Thomas was baptised at St Mary’s Cheltenham on 10 May 1839 where his parents were given as David Samuel Thomas and Mary Ann Margoschis of Hereford Cottage, Cheltenham. His father was described as a Stationer. Their next child Martha Louisa Victoria was baptised on 27 December 1840 and then Michael Solomon Alexander on 19 March 1843 and Eyra Paul on 31 August 1845.
Move to Leamington
The family moved to Leamington around this time and Samuel is listed at 19 Regent Street in the 1846 directory.
Watchmaker and Jeweller
By the 1861 census Samuel and Mary Anne had a further 4 children – Joshua, Rebecca, Bazel and Arthur. Their address is given as 29 Regent Street and Samuel was now a Watchmaker and Jeweller and his son Ezra now aged 15 was a watch and clock maker. Their 20 year old daughter Victoria was described as a Shopwoman so presumably worked in the shop with he father and brother.
Samuel died in 1872 and was buried on 5 April 1872, his entry in the All Saints Church registers giving his age as 66 years and his full name of Thomas David Samuel Margoschis.
